Match Report

Bridgend 33 - Cardiff 26

Cardiff lost in Tier Two of the Principality Premiership for the fifth time as fourteen man Bridgend held on for a bonus point win.

The Blue & Blacks came under early pressure on a sunny afternoon at the Brewery Field but the defence held firm despite Tom O’Flaherty causing some problems early on. But the Ravens were to get their reward nearly a quarter of the way through the game. A cross filed kick had spotted space behind the visitors defence and O’Flaherty was put clear for the opening score. Jamie Murphy added the extras but straight from the kick off the Blue & Blacks registered their first points. From a line out deep in the Bridgend twenty-two a simple backs move gave enough space for Cameron Gibbon to cross in the corner.

Back came Bridgend with two quick-fire tries, Murphy and Edward Drake the beneficiaries of some slack tackling in the Blue and Black half.  Murphy converted both. The game then seemed to swing Cardiff’s way as Tom Morgan was sent off for a punch late in the first half. Defending with fourteen allowed Cardiff to work the space provided by the loss of the flanker and Harri Millard, who had been creating most of Cardiff’s opportunities this time found a way through on his own for a great individual score. Jarrod Evans added the extras just before the break.

But the second half saw Cardiff make two errors that eventually were to cost them. At the restart they failed to control the kick off allowing the Ravens great field position. And they were to capitalise on that as Mike Powell got their fourth try. And when a dropped pass allowed Connor Tantum to score four minutes later it looked a long way back for the Blue & Blacks.

But the set piece was now dominant and the ball was in Blue & Black hands more often than not. A try by Will Rees Hole that was created by Millard brought the Blue & Blacks within two scores and when Murphy missed a long range penalty that would have extended that to three went wide the Blue & Blacks went straight down to the other end of the field to score. This time Rhys Carre the scorer, the big prop taking several Ravens over the line with him. Evans added the extras and Cardiff had fifteen minutes left to secure the game. But several errors meant that the game slipped away from the Blue & Blacks and they left the Brewery Filed with just the two points, but that was enough to lift them off the bottom of Tier Two.
