Cross Keys 42 Cardiff 10

Cardiff’s losing run was extended to three games after a poor performance at Cross Keys.

On a sunny afternoon at Pandy Park the Blue & Blacks produced another error strewn performance that sees them slip down the table to fifth. Keys were first on the scoreboard with a Josh Prosser penalty before Gareth Thompson levelled things up shortly after. But Cardiff simply could not get any rhythm going as when they did have the ball they made mistake after mistake, and with the scrum being penalised regularly there was no go forward.

The home side extended their lead when Prosser added two further penalties before the game’s first try. Cardiff were on the attack but the move broke down and the ball was sent into the Cardiff twenty-two. The danger seemed to have been averted, but somehow Keys got hold of the ball and when it was sent wide Garin Price was left unmarked to score, Prosser added the extras. Cardiff did get something going just before half time. A series of penalties gave them field position and when Will Rees-Hole was impeded the Keys were reduced to fourteen. They couldn't hold out as Cardiff pressed with Thomson putting Rees-Hole over for a converted try that sent the sides in 16-10 – at the break.

The second half started well for the Blue & Blacks as they looked to attack. But the failures of the first half soon came back and a dropped pass allowed the home side to get their hands on the ball to send Joe Thomas over. Prosser was wide with the conversion but virtually straight from the kick off another loose ball in midfield was hacked on by the home side. Matthew Powell got the ball first and when he was tackled James Leadbeater was on hand to finish the move off. Things went from bad to worse  for Cardiff as Adam Jones was shown a red card mid-way through the second half.

From there it was always going to be hard to get back into the game. Keys scored their bonus point try when Darren Hughes crossed, and they made it five tries as Cardiff again gave them the ball. The impressive Powell rounding of a great game for the wing as he outsprinted the would-be tacklers to cross.

That gave the Keys a handsome 42-10 victory and sent Cardiff home to regroup ahead of Wednesday’s home game against Llanelli.
