Rhodri Gwyn Jones was born in Swansea 1972 and educated at Ysgol Gynradd Gymraeg Pontybrenin, Llandovery College and Cardiff Medical School, where he played rugby for Cardiff Medicals. After captaining Wales at U15 and U17 level he won five caps for the U18s.
Joining Cardiff from Llanelli, Gwyn played 23 times for the Blue and Blacks before his career was tragically ended in a game against Swansea at the Arms Park. As he was attempting to retrieve the ball from a ruck he suffered a serious spinal injury and would never play again. In spite of the seriousness of the injury Gwyn recovered sufficiently to become a rugby critic on television and return to his career as a doctor in Cardiff. In 2002 the Welsh Former International Players Association and the Welsh Rugby Union honoured Jones with a Bravery Award.
Before his injury he had been capped at Senior level by Wales winning 13 caps, five as captain. His first cap was against Italy in 1996 and his last against New Zealand a few weeks before his tragic injury in 1997.
