Davies first played rugby as a schoolboy for Pontypridd Grammar School at the end of the second world war. While still a schoolboy he represented the Welsh team in two victory internationals. Davies played his early club rugby for local team Cilfynydd and sporadically he played for other more notable teams, playing his first game of four for Cardiff in 1945/46. He went on to join Pontypridd and it was while he was at Pontypridd that he won his first full international cap in 1947 against Scotland he went on to gain 11 caps.
When Davies went down to St Catherine's College, Cambridge he gained a place in the University rugby team, and won three 'Blues' playing in the varsity matches against Oxford between 1948 and 1950.
In 1951, Davies played eleven games for Newport, joining the team as a short term replacement for regular Newport fly-half Roy Burnett.
Davies also turned out for Clifton and Bristol and played county rugby for Yorkshire
His brother-in-law was Welsh opera singer Sir Geraint Evans (Nicknamed El Supremo).
