James Earnest Finlay was born in Banbridge Co Down in 1887. He was educated at Banbridge Academical College and at Queens University, Belfast. Finlay was one of only eight players to play for Ireland both before and after World War 1. He played 10 games for Cardiff in the 1919 – 20 season and gained 6 caps for Ireland, making his debut against England in 1913.
