Tiverton born Dick Hellings moved to the Rhondda whilst a young boy. When he left school he found work as a coal miner in Llwynypia and played for the village before joining Pontypridd.
He played once for Cardiff In 1897 – 1898. Although a Devonian he won 9 Welsh caps and also played for Exeter as well as representing Devon and Cornwall.
