Stuart Watkins was born in Newport in 1941 and started his first class career with Cross keys. Having played 137 games for the club between 1959 and 1963 and scoring 71 tries he joined Newport. In a six year stay at Rodney Parade he played 162 games and scored 115 tries for the club. His move to Cardiff came in 1969 and bu the time he left the club in 1972 he had made 34 appearances and scored 17 tries, also appearing in 23 games for the Athletic XV. His first Welsh cap was in 1964 against Scotland, and he went on to win 26 Welsh Caps as well as appear in seven games for the Barbarians. and 13 games for the 1966 British Lions on their tour to Australia and New Zealand.
