Gareth Cooper was born in Bridgend and started his rugby career at Pencoed. Cooper played twice for Cardiff before moving to Bath for four seasons. When Regional rugby started in Wales he returned to join the Celtic Warriors - until they disbanded, after only one season. He joined Newport Gwent Dragons from 2004 until 2007 and then to Gloucester. In 2009 he returned to Cardiff Blues, being released by them in 2010 due to a long standing groin injury.
Internationally Gareth Cooper represented Wales Schools, U19s, U21s, Wales A and Wales. Cooper made his full international debut for Wales in 2001 (against Italy) and went with the British and Irish Lions to New Zealand in 2005.
