James "Jim" Regan played 172 first team games for Cardiff between 1933 and 1939 before joining Huddersfield Rugby League team in 1939. In spite of an outstanding career at the Arms Park he never gained a Union Cap because of Newport player Bunner Travers, although he did gain one international Rugby League Cap just before the outbreak of the Second World War in 1939.
