William Frederick (Bill) Evans was born in April 1857 in Rhymney and was educated at Christ College, Brecon and Sherborne School. Following school, Bill went on to study at Christ's College, Oxford and although he represented Oxford University he never received a 'Blue'.
Bill was a centre and represented Wales on two occasions, making his debut against Ireland in a friendly in January 1882. The following season he played against Scotland in the Home Championships.
He played for Cardiff six times between 1878 and 1883 before joining Newport (for whom he also played during his seasons with Cardiff). During his playing career Bill Evans also played for Rhymney and Gloucester.
After his career in rugby Bill began teaching and emigrated to Australia for a few years to work as a teacher but moved back to Wales in later life.
After living rough and being homeless for the last few years of his life Bill died in July 1935.
