John Sidney Smith was born in Manchester in 1862 and played 46 games for Cardiff from 1880 until 1885, also playing for Llandaff and Harlequins. In the 1882 - 3 season he shared the role of Secretary of the club with W H Treatt. Smith gained 3 Welsh caps, twice against England (1884 and 1885) and against Ireland in (1884) as well as playing for Glamorgan and Surrey. Smith was Secretary of Cardiff in the 1883-4 season.
In 1884 Smith played for Cardiff against the Harlequins on 6 December and having taken up work in London, he played for Harlequins a week later.
A solicitor by profession, Smith-Winby was articled to the Cardiff Town Clerk, in 1883 he won the Law Society Examination Prize.
John Smith died on 23 February 1920 in Bournemouth aged 57
His father was Joshua Winby Smith and John adopted the additional name of Winby some time after his marriage in 1902. His name was recorded as John S S Winby on his death registration.
