Edward Llewellyn Treharne was born in Ystradfodwg, Pontypridd in 1862, and educated at Cowbridge Grammar School and St Bartholomew’s Hospital. His early career was spent with Pontypridd and it was while with them that he won his two Welsh caps. The first cap came against England, in Wales first ever international, in 1881. His second cap came in bizarre circumstances when he went to watch the Wales v England match at St Helens, Swansea in 1882. When it was discovered that Wales were a few players short Treharne was pulled from the crowd to play in the game. Another unusual feature of the game was that Treharne played as a forward in the game whereas in his previous international he was selected amongst the backs – such was rugby in its formative years. Treharne played three games for Cardiff between 1882 and 1884.
