Popular Glamorgan County police sergeant William John (Billy) Spiller was born in St Fagans in 1886. Between 1905 and the outbreak of war in he played 184 games for Cardiff and won ten Welsh caps between, he also appeared for Pontypridd. As well as being an excellent centre he was also a fine cricketer and was the first Glamorgan cricketer to score a 100 runs in their first season as a first class county.
Spiller died in the village of his birth a month short of his 84th birthday.
