William 'Bunner' Travers was born in Newport in 1913, the fourth of eight boys. At the age of only 15 he was playing for Pill Harriers before moving on to play for Newport. IN 1937 – 8 he played once for Cardiff and then making two further appearances in the 1947 – 48 season. On the international stage he won 12 caps for Wales and two for the British Lions in South Africa in 1938, also playing for the Army and for Crawshays Welsh XV. His Father, George, was also a Welsh International.
Travers played three games for Cardiff – in the 1937-8 season he played against Northampton. Cardiff had visited the Midlands to play Coventry and Northampton. In need of a player for the Monday game against the Saints they called upon the services of Travers – who was returning to South Wales having played for Wales against Scotland at Murrayfield on the Saturday. His other two appearances for the Blue and Blacks came some 10 years later when Cardiff toured the South-West of England. Although he had retired in 1946, he was persuaded by his good friend Haydn Tanner to join the Blue and Black party for the trip, playing twice, against Devonport Services and also Penzance & Newlyn. He was also selected for the game against Falmouth but does not appear to have played in this game.
Bunner Travers died in Newport in 1998.
