Joe Goodchild came through the Dragons academy, playing for Garndiffaith, Cross Keys and Ebbw Vale. He also played for the Dragons Premiership Select and made one appearance for the Dragons senior side. In 2022 he joined Cardiff and played 25 games during his first season at the Arms Park, scoring 11 tries. The most memorable of those tries was a spectacular diving effort in the closing minutes of a tense Welsh Cup Final at the Principality Stadium that enabled Cardiff to narrowly beat great rivals Newport.
