Cardiff RFC begin their 2026/27 Super Rygbi Cymru campaign on Saturday afternoon when they travel to Carmarthen Park to face Carmarthen Quins (KO: 14:30).
It is a landmark campaign for the Blue and Blacks, who enter their 150th season looking to build on an impressive 2025/26 campaign.
“We always want to get off to a good start and build confidence within the squad early,” said captain Craig Hudd ahead of Saturday’s encounter.
“Sometimes it takes a little while for the new boys to fully understand our structure, but I am confident from what I’ve seen in training, and hopefully we can start the season with a win.”
Preparations in pre-season were encouraging for Dan Fish’s side, as they finished unbeaten, just like Saturday’s opponents Carmarthen did.
The Blue and Blacks opened with a 99-7 triumph over St Albans RFC and concluded with a 59-5 victory against Brixham RFC, which saw Cardiff go unbeaten in pre-season for the second consecutive season.
Now, attention has shifted firmly onto Cardiff’s third season in Super Rygbi Cymru; they do so hoping to make it a campaign to remember.
“Our focus this pre-season has been how we can right the wrongs of the last couple of years and push on for silverware this season,” added Hudd.
“With it also being our 150th year, the whole group are determined to bring home a trophy this year.”
The Blue and Blacks, for a second consecutive year, claimed pole position in the regular season. But their 2025/26 season ended in disappointment with a 30-22 defeat against Llandovery in the play-off semi-finals.
Following last season’s conclusion, Hudd is aiming to respond this campaign, although he admits the Blue and Blacks face a tough opening test away to Carmarthen.
“We were bitterly disappointed to fall short again at the semi-final stage after a strong finish at the end of the season,” he added.
“Carmarthen away is always a tough fixture, and we have had some great battles with them the last few years.
“We know what to expect from them on Saturday and hopefully all the hard work put in over the last few months will pay dividends on the weekend.”
