Pontypridd 6 Cardiff 45

Cardiff recorded their biggest ever win at Sardis Rd and a win for the first time since 2009, securing a bonus point in the process.

Cardiff made the brighter start spending most of the first ten minutes in the Pontypridd half. That dominance was turned into a lead in the tenth minute as Dan Fish opened the scoring with a penalty.

Fish was to add to the scoring when he broke through a hole in the defence for a try he converted himself. Pontypridd got on the scoreboard midway through the half with a penalty by Tyler Morris. Back came Cardiff after a series of penalties gave the Blue & Blacks a lineout close to the line. The forwards did the rest Iestyn Harris at the back of the maul to score, Fish converted from the touchline. Morris added a penalty shortly before Rory Harries sent Ryan Wilkins through a gap. The centre rounded the full back to score a try Fish converted for a 24-6 half time lead.

The bonus point try came ten minutes into the second half. A line out was dragged down and the ball was shifted from one side to the other until Fish picked a pass that sent Wilkins over for his second.

Cardiff’s defence had been superb all game and when the pressure came again midway through the second half Ioan Evans intercepted a sloppy pass in midfield to race under the posts to score Cardiff’s fifth try. The sixth try came just before the end. Wilkins and James Beal combining to send the winger over, Maynard converted to give the Blue & Blacks a long overdue win at Sardis Rd.
