Cardiff came away from Rodney Parade with nothing but an increased injury list to show for their efforts.
The game had started well for the Blue & Blacks with the first attack ending in a Dan Fish penalty, but form there it went downhill. Jack Maynard was taken off with a shoulder injury and a few minutes later Newport got the first try of the game. An attempted 50-22 went dead giving the home side great field position. Ioan Davis made a break the was halted but Cameron Lewis was on hand to score. Will Reed added the extras.
Fish added another penalty for Cardiff but Newport then took control of the game. A knock-on allowed Newport a scrum from which Davis was able to score to give the Black and Ambers a 12-6 half time lead.
From the restart Newport had a lineout near the Cardiff line and Will Reed was able to squeeze over for a try he converted. A tackle in midfield resulted in the next try. The ball spilt free and Elliot Frewen hacked it into the in-goal area where he dotted it down.
Fish was the next Cardiff man forced from the field, this time a knee injury the cause. At one point the Blue & Blacks were down to 13 fit players on the field with several players being treated on the side-lines. Dan Preece was another not to return with an injury that looks serious enough for it to end the prop’s season.
Newport scored two more tries as a patched up Cardiff side defended for their lives. Che Hope and Oli Andrew rounding off a sorry day for the Blue & Blacks.
