Newport 34 Cardiff 28

Cardiff went out of the cup at the semi-final stage, losing to old rivals Newport at Sardis Rd.

Newport had the first chance of the game. A simple penalty opportunity was spurned in favour of a line-out, but the ball was picked off on the Cardiff line and cleared. The Blue & Blacks were first on the boar, however, with a Dan Fish penalty. It got better a few minutes later as Mason Grady was put through a gaping hole in the Newport defence, the centre putting Cameron Winnett over for the first try of the game.

Newport responded soon after. A penalty was sent into the twenty-two and from the line out a blind side move sent Will Talbot-Davies over, Matt O’Brien added the extras. The scrum was proving to be a bit of a mess for both sides and after two penalties each Cardiff were able to extend their lead with another Fish penalty. After a lengthy injury stoppage Newport took the lead. A cross field kick was collected by Talbot-Davies, O’Brien was again on target from the touch line.

Cardiff went back in front shortly before half time. A series of pick and drives was finished by Alex Everett, Fish converting for a 18-14 lead. Shortly before the break the Black and Ambers made it a one point game with an O’Brien penalty.

Newport re-took the lead just after the second half had kicked off. A lineout on the Cardiff line was driven over and Matt O’Brien was at the bottom of the pile. It took a while for the next score but when it came it went to the Blue & Blacks. A Newport lineout went wrong and when the ball ended up in Ellis Bevan’s hands the scrum half powered over from 30 metres. Fish converted to put the Blue and Blacks ahead. But the Black and Ambers driving maul was working well and a few minutes later the lead changed hands again when Jamie Jeune went over. O’Brien and Fish exchanged penalties late on, Newport though progressed to the final.
