Barry John

Cardiff Rugby are devastated to learn of the passing of legendary former fly-half Barry John at 79.

Universally known as ‘The King’, John made 93 appearances for the Blue and Blacks after a debut away at Torquay before forming one of the game’s greatest half-back partnerships with Sir Gareth Edwards and scoring 24 tries, between 1967 and 1972.

During that time he also played in 25 internationals for Wales and five Tests for the British and Irish Lions. He won three Five Nations titles, a Grand Slam and two Triple Crowns, and inspire the Lions to a historic 2-1 series victory over New Zealand, for which he was acclaimed the King.

In a statement, John’s family said: “Barry John died peacefully today at the University Hospital of Wales surrounded by his loving wife and four children. He was a loving Dadcu to his 11 grandchildren and much-loved brother.”
