Captain’s Corner: Craig Hudd Previews Camarthen Quins Meeting

Cardiff RFC return to the Cardiff Arms Park on Saturday afternoon as Carmarthen Quins travel to the Welsh capital in Super Rygbi Cymru (KO: 14:30).

The Blue and Blacks enter the contest against the Quins with four wins from their opening four matches, and last weekend Dan Fish’s side produced another impressive display against Ebbw Vale RFC, running out 59-14 winners after a closely contested first-half.

“It was an excellent performance from the boys, especially in the second-half,” said captain Craig Hudd.

“We managed to control the game brilliantly, I thought and were able to execute our game plan really well and apply continuous pressure onto Ebbw Vale, which allowed us to put the ball in the hands of our playmakers.”

There were plenty of positives to take from the sunny afternoon at the CiNER Glass Community Stadium, with both Matty Young and Dewi Cross scoring twice, while Alun Rees, Tom Cottle, Joe Cowell, Sion Davies and Joe Goodchild also scored.

Lloyd Lucas, making his first appearance of the 2026/27 season, added ten points from the tee, with replacement Ben Coomer kicking four more, helping the Blue and Blacks secure the six-point bonus-point win.

It was the Blue and Blacks’ first victory in Ebbw Vale since January 2024, and the win moved them to second in the Super Rygbi Cymru table, one point behind league leaders Newport RFC.

“It was again another good performance, and we are building nicely at the moment, and confidence is high,” Hudd added.

“But it was back to training this week, tidying up a few pieces and focusing on how we can improve and focusing on what we need to do in order to get the result against Carmarthen.”

Saturday afternoon’s fixture against the Quins repeats Cardiff’s season-opening match, when they claimed a hard-fought 27-17 victory at a sodden Carmarthen Park.

As he did last weekend against the Steelmen, full-back Matty Young expertly scored a brace, while Alun Rees and Dewi Cross also scored for the Blue and Blacks in West Wales.

The Quins last headed to the Welsh capital in April, when Cardiff secured a semi-final spot with a 50-33 win. However, in their last regular-season meeting at the Cardiff Arms Park, the Quins dramatically claimed a late winner, with Ellis Price kicking a penalty with the clock in the red.

“They gave us a really good game down in their place, and we are expecting no difference this week,” Hudd continued.

“Last year they beat us at home, so we know we have to be at our best to get a result, and this year is no different.

“We are preparing well and looking to adjust a few things from our previous encounter so that we can hopefully right a few wrongs from last year.”
