Cardiff RFC – Pontypool RFC Team News

Cardiff RFC return back to Super Rygbi Cymru action against Pontypool RFC (KO: 16:25) on Saturday, which is a part of a massive double-header at the Cardiff Arms Park.

Like last season’s meeting against the Pontypool Park side in Cardiff, following the Blue and Blacks match will be Cardiff Rugby taking on Edinburgh in an intriguing United Rugby Championship encounter (KO: 19:45).

Both Cardiff RFC and Cardiff Rugby are very grateful to Pontypool for allowing this opportunity.

Cardiff RFC come into the match on Saturday after returning back to winning ways as they put aside Aberavon 45-26, with the hosts now looking to record back-to-back home wins in the SRC for the first time since March’s 31-24 victory over Aberavon.

Tries from Alun Rees, Dewi Cross, Tom Cottle, Matty Young, Joe Goodchild, Joe Cowell, and Osian Darwin-Lewis accompanied by ten points from the tee by Lloyd Lucas saw the Blue and Blacks record their second win of the season last Saturday.

Pre-Match Thoughts:

Speaking ahead of the contest, head coach, Dan Fish said: “Great to get the six points at home against a tough Aberavon team.

“We started well, then let them back into the game. A bit of brilliance from Matty Young meant we went in half time leading.

“Second half we played more like Cardiff. So, good phases in attack led to points being scored, and the pleasing thing is we created a few more opportunities. Now we just need to start taking them and being more ruthless.

“Great to have a double-header on Saturday and we are really looking forward to it, another tough test this week against Pontypool who are a tough team to play against, and after their big win (43-10 vs Bridgend Ravens) last weekend will be on a high.

“They are a tough team with good ball carriers and we know they got a lot of players good over the ball so, we got to be red hot in that area this weekend.

“We need to make sure we are switched on for the full 80 minutes and not drift in and out of the match as we know and found out when we switch off we will get punished.”

Remember the last meeting at the Arms Park?

The last time these two met in Cardiff was back in November last year, in fact that was the Blue and Blacks’ only fixture of that month.

Winger Dewi Cross scored twice, which also saw him hit the 50-point mark after only seven matches in last year’s SRC.

For Pooler, Scott Matthews scored the visitors only try that afternoon and this was after an early penalty by Kieran Meek, which saw the visitors only score 10 points.

Then accompanying Cross was winger Tom Bowen and hooker Alun Rees, who both scored in the second half, which helped guide Fish’s side to a 27-10 victory prior to Cardiff Rugby’s 31-23 victory over Dragons RFC in the second encounter on that day.
