This will be the season that the world changed. All was going well for the Blue & Blacks until March when Boris Johnson stood up and told us that Cardiff wouldn’t be allowed to win the double. Of course, he also told us to stay at home because of a Global Pandemic that was to cause so much devastation.
It had started with a double header at Sterling road with St Peters and Glam Wanderers the opposition, Cardiff winning one out of two. The friendlies ending at Bedwas with a 42-21 win. Leon Andrews marking his return to the club with a try in his 100th appearance.
The league season started at home to Pontypridd. A typical derby ended in the way a great game should. Cardiff scored in the corner with the last play of the game, Joe Scrivens stepped up and converted from wide out to give the Blue & Blacks a one-point win. That was followed by a successful long trip north in defence of the Welsh Cup. Two Morgan Allen tries set Cardiff on their way – five tries in all as the Blue & Blacks progressed.
Back in the league a week later at Llanelli Allen was again amongst the scorers as Cardiff ran in four tries to stay top of the league. October saw the start of the Autumn Internationals and Cardiff only playing three times. All were won. A hard-fought game against Swansea (17-10) was followed by another home win this time against the Quins. Replacement Alex Everett coming off the bench for a brace in a bonus point win. It was then back on the bus as North Wales beckoned again. Another long trip was rewarded with a three try win.
Ebbw Vale came to the Arms Park twice in November – the league game was played in a storm and it is no surprise that it wasn’t a free-flowing game, Cardiff coming out on top 12-3. The cup a week later though was a different matter. Dan Fish scored a hat-trick as the Blue & Blacks recorded a record score against Ebbw – 11 tries in a 78-12 win. The Ravens were put back in their nest the following week in a bonus point win, that was followed by a top of the table clash with the Wizards. TV cameras saw a tight game edged by Cardiff by a point 13-12.
December had four games – 3 won (Merthyr, Llandovery and Newport) one lost at Sardis Rd where in front of the TV cameras a last-minute refereeing decision seemed to cost Cardiff the game. January saw Llanelli visit the Arms Park twice. The Blue & Blacks scored 35 points in each game with Llanelli scoring 35 across both, Cardiff retained top spot in the league and advanced to the semi-final of the cup. A visit to Carmarthen though proved to be a game too many as a heavy defeat saw the chasing pack close the gap in the league.
Bridgend visited the Arms Park in February and another bonus point win was achieved only for the gap at the top to be closed by a defeat at Aberavon in early March. Cardiff still had a seven-point advantage with five games left and a game in hand. It was hard to see what could stop the Blue & Blacks claiming a first title sine 2008/09. The Pandemic stopped that in its tracks as the RGC game was called off late on Friday evening and the World shut down shortly after.
