Jim Sullivan was born in Cardiff and educated at St Albans School. After making his first team debut against Neath in October 1920, at the age of 16 and 10 months, he played 38 games for Cardiff over te next two seasons. Two months after his Cardiff debut he played for the Barbarians against Newport, and then after starring in the Welsh Trial he was put on standby for the Wales team to play France in February 1921.
Jim was an apprentice boilermaker in Cardiff and times were hard. It was no surprise, therefore, when he turned professional and joined Wigan, going on to appear for them in 774 games for them. After his retirement he remained at Central Park for a further six seasons as coach before taking up the role with St Helens.
At the age of 74 Jim Sullivan passed away in September 1977 in Wigan.
