Born in 1879 in the Westgate Inn on Frances Street, John William ‘Wax’ Williams played in 58 games for Cardiff between 1898-1902 before heading North in June, 1902, to join Halifax. Known as Billy during his rugby league days, he won the Challenge Cup twice, in 1903 and 1904, and helped his club win the First Division title in the 1902-03 season, also playing in the side that lost in the 1905 Yorkshire Cup final.
