Swansea 20 Cardiff 27

Cardiff came away from St Helens with a hard fought win, but managed to gain the necessary bonus point.

All the early pressure came from Cardiff,  but they were unable to break down a robust Swansea defence. Several attacks were thwarted until a five metre lineout led to the first try. The ball was worked from side to side after a loose throw was collected by Alun Rees. When the ball eventually came back to the same side Dan Fish was able to send Cameron Winnett over in the corner. Luke Scully was just wide with the conversion but landed a penalty goal to extend the Blue & Black lead a few minutes later.

The All Whites got on the board a few minutes later when Cai Evans landed a simple penalty and the home side went over for their first try when Harri Houston made a break. When he was stopped the ball was whipped wide for Callum Bowden to score, Evans converted. He was on target again as Swansea extended their lead with another penalty. Cardiff came back into the game when Rees made a break straight up the middle of the pitch and linked with Ellis Bevan. The scrum half was stopped short but the ball was moved out to Fish who sent Harri Millard over, Scully converted for a 15-13 lead.

Then second half saw the Blue & Blacks extend their lead. A series of penalties gave Cardiff a lineout ten metres out and with ball secured the lineout drive was joined by the backs. Inevitably, it seems, it was Rees who went over, Scully added the extras. The bonus point try came twenty minutes into the half when a defensive Swansea lineout was stolen and the ball moved wide. When it came back the other way Fish sent Millard clear and his inside sent Nathan Hudd over, Fish converted.

Swansea pressed hard towards the end of the game but only managed consolation try by Tom Florence, which was converted, but Cardiff had the bonus point win they needed to keep championship hopes alive.
