Cardiff lost out in their final game of the Indigo Premiership cup league as they were defeated by Merthyr
The visitors were first on the board when a clearance kick was fielded by Ben Jones. He chipped the ball over the oncoming defence and the ball bounced nicely into his hands for him to score. And a few minutes later they were over again. This time a lineout drive was stopped short, the ball was recycled and Pat McBride crashed over.
Cardiff got on the scoreboard from a loose clearance kick by the visitors. The ball was run back and when a ruck formed near the touchline, Ioan Evans found his way blocked. A clever chip though bounced nicely for hi to regather and score. Aaron Pinched extended the Ironmen’s lead following several phases.
A catch and drive for the Blue & Blacks led to the next try, despite seeming like it had been pulled down the drive was stopped just short. A few recycles though and the ball was in midfield and Alex Everett crashed over under the posts.
The Cardiff scrum was under pressure at this point and when Merthyr pushed them off the ball, they were able to break the Cardiff line and get in behind them, Justin James on hand to score. Just before half time a lineout drive led to a Cardiff score. The maul went down but the ball was whipped wide for Cameron Winnett so score.
Cardiff were first on the board in the second half. Evans had charged into the Merthyr 22 before the ball went on the floor. Ryan Wilkins though gathered it and chipped the ball over the top, regathered and scored under the posts. Merthyr’s next lineout drive was more of a success than the previous ones. Chris Phillips at the back to score. Cardiff’s attempt was again pulled down by the ball again was recycled and moved wide, and in a copy of the first half try Jacob Beetham was out on his own to score.
Merthyr’s next try was a result of several phases that went back and forth in the Cardiff 22 Daffydd Stonelake the scorer. And when Merthyr finished a move in the dying minutes the game was over for the Blue & Blacks.
