Just before kick-off there was a moment of reflection as we remembered Dennis Gethin, a former Cardiff player and Welsh Rugby Union President.
With the weather not being in favour of either team in the first half, whenever referee Tom Spurrier awarded either side a penalty within kicking distance both captains opted for the posts.
After missing two shots from well inside his own half, Harrison James got the Blue and Blacks up and running, converting from the halfway line to break the deadlock.
Minutes later, Matthew Jarvis brought the visitors back level from an impressive distance as Pooler started to build momentum as we got nearer to the end of tightly contested first half of rugby.
Just before the end of the half Harrison James stepped up and yet again struck gold as he put the Blue and Blacks three points clear at the break from just inside his own half.
HT: Cardiff 6-3 Pontypool.
Once the second half got underway the weather started to improve which opened up the game for both teams. The visitors however started the second half strongly as ill discipline from the Blue and Blacks proved costly as flyhalf Matthew Jarvis kicked two penalties to put the visitors in front for the first time.
With minutes left on the clock, James held his nerve and put the Blue and Blacks back level. However, there was still time left in the game as Matthew Jarvis fired the ball deep into the Cardiff half and inside centre Amosa Nove charged the ball down and crossed for the first try of the afternoon and his second of the season.
With the clock now in the red, one last big push was needed. After a quick turnover from the restart, Cardiff found themselves just outside Poolers twenty-two. The Blue and Blacks exerted pressure on Poolers defence, but the ball was eventually turned over and second row Ashley Sweet kicked the ball dead as the visitors recorded their seventh win of the season.
FT: Cardiff 9-16 Pontypool
Up next for the Blue and Blacks is a game against old rivals Newport on the 11th of November.
