Cardiff – Pontypridd team news

Cardiff start the Indigo Premiership season on Friday night with a live televised game against Pontypridd.
Morgan Allen, who was named as captain of Cardiff RFC this week, starts the game in a back row that sees Zach O’Driscoll as the only other face from last season.

There are new caps all around the team as Head Coach Steve Law uses the new signings for the first time.
At fullback Edd Howley – one of last season’s top scorers, starts with James Beal and Joe Gatt on the wings. The new centre combination has former Canterbury Crusader Sam Beard and Leon Andrews paired together for the first time. Gareth Thompson joins Ben Williams as the half back combination.

Two new faces start in the front row. Thomas Davies is joined by Evan Yardley and Ollie Drake, both gaining the first Cardiff starts. James Ratti and Callum Bradbury form the powerhouse with Alex Everett completing the back row.
Head Coach Steve Law said ‘we are looking forward to getting on with the season. The preparation for this has been a bit disjointed with a lot of our boys playing with the Cardiff Blues A side, but this has been a great experience for them and one that we at Cardiff RFC are happy to support.

The training session this week have been focused on our game and the squad has trained well all week. With a few injuries there are opportunities for players to show what they can do and we are grateful to Cardiff High School Old Boys for releasing Zach Bartlett to cover for us.

Starting with Ponty as our first game was always going to be a challenge but an exciting one that we are all looking forward to. They finished one point behind us in the league last season and I’m sure this game will be of the same intensity as the two we played last season. But this is the first game and the season is a long one. We are up up for the challenge and looking to set our standards high on Friday”.
