John "Jack" Powell was born in Merthyr in 1882 and played for Cardiff (in 164 games between 1903 and 1910) and London Welsh. During his time with Cardiff he gained his only Welsh International Cap against Ireland in 1906, and Glamorgan County against the 1905 All Blacks.
A coal trimmer by trade he passed away in March 1941 at the age of 58.
