Ray Cheney

Cardiff RFC have been saddened to hear of the passing of Ray Cheney yesterday aged 82 following a battle with cancer

Ray played at full back for the 1st XV on 69 occasions between 1965 – 1970.And was the club’s top scorer in the 1966-67 season with 151 points and played in the famous win against Australia in 1966.

Ray was a good all round sportsman who gained a Welsh Youth Soccer cap at centre forward and played cricket for Monmouthshire County Cricket Club.

Prior to joining Cardiff he played rugby for the RAF, Pontypool, Newport appearing in their famous win against the All Blacks in 1963 he was also Welsh Reserve on 23 occasions.

He played for the Crawshays and Monmouthshire and was a pioneer of the ‘Round the Corner kicking style’

Ray was a good supporter of the Former Players Association and attended the Dinner last November as one of the members of the first Cardiff Overseas Tour which was to South Africa in 1967.

He will be fondly remembered by all who knew him. We offer our sincere condolences to Ray’s wife Sue, his sons Tim and Robin and daughters Pauline and Karen at this sad time.
