Captain’s Corner: Nathan Hudd Previews Newport RFC Meeting

In their second outing of the Super Rygbi Cymru Cup, Cardiff RFC face Newport RFC at the Cardiff Arms Park (KO: 14:00).

Dan Fish’s head into the encounter looking to record their first win of the group stages, and this comes following a 34-5 defeat against Rygbi Gogledd Cymru in Colwyn Bay last Saturday.

Saturday’s clash with the Black and Ambers will also see open-side Nathan Hudd captain the side for the first time.

“Obviously a massive honour to captain the club and take the reins with my brother being out with an injury,” began Hudd, who is nearing 100 appearances for the club.

“A very proud moment for myself and my family.”

Winger Dewi Cross was the Blue and Blacks’ only try scorer last weekend at Stadiwm Eirias, but they head back to the Arms Park for the first time since impressively putting aside top-of-the-league Ebbw Vale.

“I think there is a lot to learn from last week’s game mainly being improving our accuracy in the 22 as we created a lot but didn’t convert a lot of opportunities into points.

“It’s always a tough test against Newport.

“We both like to play a similar brand of rugby so hopefully we are instore for a good game.”

The pair last met in Cardiff back in May last year, when debutant Lloyd Lucas, who has been selected on the bench for Wales U20s on Friday evening, kicked 10 points from the tee.

This was accompanied by scores from Ethan Lloyd and Elijah Evans, which proved not to be enough as Newport recorded a 35-20 victory.

Tomorrow afternoon’s meeting will also see Fish hand opportunities to pathway products, Sonny McCabe, Harry Turner, Ioan Leyshon, Bailey Cutts, and Joseff Jones, who are all selected in the starting XV.

In fact, 21 players out of the match day 23 have come through the Cardiff Rugby pathway at some point. “It’s great to see some of the youngsters stepping up and getting opportunities,” added Hudd.

“Over the years I’ve been here, we have had some great players come through and go on to achieve great things in the game.

“Hopefully, tomorrow can be the start of some of their journeys.”
