Cardiff 35 RGC 17

Cardiff gained a bonus point at the Arms Park as Joe Williams scored a second half hat trick.

RGC had made the long trip down on a sunny day and were out of the blocks quickly with scrum half Ollie Wynn at the heart of everything they did. Cardiff held firm and were first on the scoreboard when, from a penalty, they went for the corner. A few drives were repelled, but eventually Freddie Barnes (who was presented with his club tie after the game) crashed over with the whole pack behind him.

Harrison James hit the upright with the conversion, but landed three first half penalties as RGC strayed offside several times. The visitors only points of the first half came through Sam Earl Jones as he struck a penalty just as the half ended.

The Blue & Blacks made a fast start to the second half, wings James Beal and Dewi Cross going close, but it was RGC that scored the next try. An overthrown line-out was collected in midfield by Huw Taylor who scored a converted try, Joe Williams then took a hand on proceedings. His first try came  after a break by Luke Pollock whose run split the defence. When the ball was popped up the replacement scrum half  was on hand to dive over.

His second try was another short range effort after the whole team had been involved in gaining field position, Williams picking up and forcing his way over.  After two close range efforts the third try was a move from distance.  Morgan Allen picked the ball up on the RGC ten metre line and his bulldozing  run took him into space. The cover wasn’t able to get to him and his pass outside allowed Williams to jog the final 20 metres to score under the posts, without being touched. Harrison James converted two of the three tries, the final try being converted by Jacob Lloyd. RGC did get a consolation when Dafydd Willams went over in the corner, but it was Cardiff who came away with the bonus point victory.
